Hyperpigmentation is identified as an unusual darkening of skin. Certain areas of skin in the face, hands, and legs are darkened when you are affected by this skin disorder. This is caused by excessive production of a pigment called Melanin. Our skin has certain special cells called Melanocytes. These special cells produce Melanin pigments. The increase in Melanin pigments are influenced by certain biological and other physiological factors. It is also influenced by taking birth control pills and one’s hormone levels. The Asian, South African and mostly the Mediterranean skins are easily prone to this skin disease. Today, hundreds of companies offer various options for hyperpigmentation treatments. The market is full of products and it is very difficult to make a decision which one to use. We have reviewed the two most popular products. Here are the results:

#1 Meladerm

Meladerm is the #1 hyperpigmentation/skin lightening product. It won the award for “Best Skin Lightener” in 2010. Meladerm can remove age/liver/sun spots, melasma, acne marks, and hyperpigmentation and is proven to be very effective. You can see permanent results within 2-4 weeks.

Meladerm contains no hydroquinone, mercury, steroids, or parabens. This is reassuring since each of those items is either proven to have adverse health effects or currently under suspicion. Other active ingredients are extracts from the Mulberry, Licorice, and Bearberry plants. That is why the company has thousands of satisfied customers all over the world.

#2 SkinBright

SkinBright is the second product in our rating. The two primary ingredients are kojic acid and Alpha-Arbutin. Kojic acid is a by-product of the production of sake, the Japanese rice wine and generally accepted as an effective skin whitener. Alpha-arbutin is a hydroquinone derivative (note – NOT hydroquinone) isolated from the leaves of the bearberry shrub, cranberry, blueberry and pears.

SkinBright is most effective with epidermal pigmentation rather than all hyperpigmentation conditions. The former is easier to treat because deeper skin layers are not involved. Premium Naturals also claims that SkinBright addresses fine lines and wrinkles. Their website gives an unusually extensive ingredient list, including 15 items and including aloe vera.

Listed below are the major and common causes of Hyperpigmentation.

Skin gets damaged when it is constantly exposed to sun.

Due to the usage of chemicals on skin

Skin injuries

Acne

Main cause of this skin disorder is caused by the Ultra Violet rays. The UV rays will stimulate the Melanocytes and generate more melanin pigments. So chances of Hyperpigmentation are high when one’s skin is constantly exposed to sun. Sun damage will also increase ageing affect on one’s skin.

Acne is caused by the disorder of oil glands present in skin. These oil glands block pores in the skin and will result in pimples. Later it leaves dark spots.

Usages of chemicals also cause Hyperpigmentation. One has to be very careful before applying face creams and other nourishing creams. It may contain certain percentage of chemicals that harms skin.

Treatment for Hyperpigmentation:

Everyone will like to have a clear and smooth skin. But due to various biological and physiological factors it gets infected easily. Several treatments are available for this skin disorder. Hyperpigmentation can be easily cured if appropriate treatment is taken. It will also improve your appearance than before. Powerful formulas in these treatments include effective natural skin lightening creams and bio-active agents.

Treatment for Hyperpigmentation includes the following.

Hydroquinone based skin creams

Treatments for skin lightening with Alpha hydroxyl acids, Topical Glucocorticoids, Licorice extract etc.

Usage of appropriate skin protection creams containing SPF 15 or SPF 30 to protect from Ultra Violet rays.

The latest treatment for this skin disorder is identified in India from a natural plant extract. It is called the extrapone nutgrass root. It is basically a skin whitener that controls 41% of Melanin generation in one’s body. There are no side effects in undergoing this treatment. This also acts as an anti aging cream. Thus it is called as the skin friendly whitening cream. Laser treatments are also available for Hyperpigmentation but it is expensive.

One can notice the reduction of pigmentation by undergoing one of the above said treatments. It also enhances the smoothness of your skin. These are the safer treatments to get rid of Hyperpigmentation. All these treatments will be a failure if you skin is constantly exposed to the ultra violet rays.

Hyperpigmentation Bleaching Agents:

Best bleaching agents use Hydroquinone. It controls the melanin pigments and helps in lightening the skin. There are also many varieties of bleaching agents available in the market. But without proper prescriptions do not apply those bleaching agents. It may spoil one’s skin than before.

Tips to protect skin from Hyperpigmentation:

Here are some tips to protect your skin from this common disorder.

Always go for natural treatments than finding immediate solutions. Because finding immediate solution for Hyperpigmentation may result in unwanted purchases of whitening creams which are expensive.

Do not go for chemical peels as they will not work out for harder skin types.

Enjoy the sunny day by using Sun protection creams containing SPF 15 or SPF 30.

Wipe your face and skin with clean clothes or tissue papers.

Now that you have gotten an answer for what is Hyperpigmentation, its causes and cures, go get rid of hyperpigmentation and have a peaceful life.

Is Meladerm Effective Against Skin Discoloration?

The manufacturer, Civant Skin Care, points out that the ingredients in Meladerm are not different that those of some other products, claiming that the company’s manufacturing processes produce a more stable and effective product and at just the right concentration for effectiveness without irritation. For example, one of the primary ingredients, Kojic Acid, is said to deteriorate rapidly when exposed to light and air, a fact apparently addressed by Civant during manufacturing and by the particular way it is packaged for your use.

Visit the Official Website of Meladerm

How quickly does it work?

Dark spots, scars, and skin discolorations diminish in two weeks with full results acheived within 2 to 3 months, depending on the exact nature of your skin.

Is Meladerm safe?

Meladerm contains no hydroquinone, mercury, steroids, or parabens. This is reassuring since each of those items is either proven to have adverse health effects or currently under suspicion. Other active ingredients are extracts from the Mulberry, Licorice, and Bearberry plants.

What are customers saying?

Customer reviews of Meladerm on the Internet are quite positive. There is one mention that there is a slight medicinal smell, but most reviews are very positive, especially about the results.

Is Meladerm difficult to use?

Meladerm is used twice daily, only on the affected area. An exfoliation scrub may be beneficial before use. You should also use an SPF 30+ sunscreen, avoid heavy sun exposure and tanning beds or lamps.

Are there any side effects?

As with most skin care products, test a small amount on your skin first, preferably on a non-facial area, and leave for 24 hours. Mild skin irritation may be experienced by some users and of course this is not necessarily unusual. This effect should be watched closely, to ensure it is not progressively worsening. Do not use if pregnant, nursing, or under age 12.

Some skin peeling from the treated area is to be expected.

If you have other skin conditions, it is best to check with your dermatologist before use. Also, if you are using other skin treatments, the possibility of interaction with Meladerm exists.

Will SkinBright Help Your Skin’s Hyperpigmentation?

A popular bleaching agent is SkinBright Skin Brightener, a product of Premium Naturals LLC. The two primary ingredients are kojic acid and Alpha-Arbutin. Premium Naturals claims that their “advanced process” allows combination of these two “powerful lighteners” into a single product.

A talk with your dermatologist may help determine if SkinBright will help you.

Premium Naturals also claims that SkinBright addresses fine lines and wrinkles. Their website gives an unusually extensive ingredient list, including 15 items and including aloe vera.

Visit SkinBright’s Official Website

How quickly does it work?

Premium Naturals says that SkinBright produces results in as little as two weeks, with full (presumably final) results in 3 to 6 months of regular use. Of course, individual results will vary depending on your skin tone and other factors.

Is SkinBright safe?

The company points out that SkinBright is paraben free and uses “all natural ingredients.” As with any skin care product, limited testing in a non-facial area is advisable.

What are customers saying?

Most customer reviews of SkinBright on the Internet are quite positive, but not universally so. At one point, the company gave away free product in return for evaluations.

“After using SkinBright, my acne scars which I had before have all faded away. I have gotten compliments from all my friends.”

“I have been using the Skin Bright cream for more than a month and so far no results, not even a little bit. I still have a little bit left so I’ll give it another 2 weeks and see what happens.”

Is SkinBright difficult to use?

Directions are simple enough – to apply a thin layer to affected areas twice daily.

Are there any side effects?

It’s wise with any cosmetic product to test it on a limited non-facial area before use. Mild skin irritation can result in some cases. The company advises against use if pregnant or nursing.

Due to the strong exfoliating properties of SkinBright, some skin peeling is to be expected. The company advises use of a sunscreen for the newly exposed skin layers.

Other pre-existing skin conditions and the possibility of interaction with other skin medications suggest that consultation with your dermatologist may be advisable.

Skin hyperpigmentation occurs when areas of the skin become noticeably darker and is caused by an excessive production of melanin. Hyperpigmentation often displays as melasma, age spots, dark scars in general and even acne scars. They can appear anywhere on the body, including the hands and legs, but are usually seen on the face.

Women who are pregnant or taking birth control pills often develop melasma due to increased levels of estrogen; thus giving it the nickname of the ‘mask of pregnancy’. Once the estrogen levels drop the melasma will usually clear up on its own. However, the other forms of hyperpigmentation can be much more difficult to cure and the resulting marks can be very difficult to remove.

While this condition can affect any skin type, it is seen most often in darker skin tones; especially with people of African or South Asian descent. Skin lightening creams, microdermabrasion and laser skin lightening are all treatments currently used to treat hyperpigmentation. Exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays also contributes to hyperpigmentation. This means that everyone should wear sunblock daily, including those people who don’t typically have to worry about painful sunburns. The sunscreen chosen should be at least SPF 15. You may consider checking out iS Clinical Hyperpigmentation Kit.

Skin Hyperpigmentation can also be described as a focal area or patch of darker pigmentation on any area of the skin. Special cells in the skin called melanocytes naturally produce melanin – the pigment which your body uses to create skin and hair color. The production of melanin is under very sophisticated and tight control but is influenced by a wide variety of biological and physiological factors. When there are too many melanocytes attracted to a given area, or if they are overactive, overproduction of melanin occurs and hyperpigmentation results.

Understanding Skin Hyperpigmentation

Understanding what skin hyperpigmentation is may be simple but it is far from a simple problem. A full medical history and physical examination must be the foundation for any treatment plan for hyperpigmentation problems. A working diagnosis is also extremely important for developing the best strategies. Not all hyperpigmentation is the same. Skin Hyperpigmentation can be associated with certain medical problems and conditions. Different forms of hyperpigmentation will respond better to different types of treatment. Always consult with your physician expert in cosmetic skin care.

Without question, every treatment plan will include minimizing sun exposure. Sun (UV radiation) avoidance, sun protection and sunblock will always represent the simplest and most critically important part of any plan for the treatment of hyperpigmentation. That’s because nothing stimulates melanocytes and melanin production more than UV radiation exposure. And pigment stimulation is the last thing we want when we are treating hyperpigmentation!

Resurfacing eliminates dead or dying pigmented surface skin cells (keratinocytes) allowing the less pigmented, fresher, new skin cells to be revealed at the surface. Resurfacing also stimulates cellular growth and turnover from the deeper levels of the skin, further assisting the skin in its shedding of pigmentation and the pigmented keratinocytes contributing to the hyperpigmentation. Certain types of lasers can also be used along these lines. But be careful – laser therapies can also cause skin hyperpigmentation! A series of 5 to 6 in-office chemical peels performed weekly, combined with a customized at-home regimen of topical agents can be quite helpful.

Below is a list of some currently available topical agents (brighteners, lighteners, whiteners) which are often used in the war against hyperpigmentation. You will find that many of these compounds are combined within a single product. Combinations of methods and the use of multiple ingredient topical agents seem to work better than any single mode therapy or single topical agent. However, no single agent seems to work as well on hyperpigmentation as hydroquinone does alone.

Constant sun exposure causes increased melanin production. Regardless of skin color, melanin is a natural protective skin pigment that guards it from harmful sun rays. The increased production of such is caused by frequent periods of sun exposure, causing our tone to shift from lighter to tan or even darker. For those with lighter skin tone and innately with fewer melanin amounts, they are surely more at risk for burning and skin damage. This results to skin hyperpigmentation giving us the appearance of uneven skin tone.

Premature skin aging and the development of dark spots and wrinkle aging have been long treated with traditional forms of solutions which have not been proven very effective. Those who suffer from hyper-pigmentation resort to covering up with loads of make-up instead of initially preventing and treating the issue. This wrong act does little to actually help in healing the concern. Make-up in excessive amounts can further aggravate the dilemma as it can hinder oxygen exchange for the skin cells. Also, this thought-of remedy can only highlight skin flaws, making them even more visible than without make-up at all.

Skin hyperpigmentation and the free radicals

It has been proven that our surroundings and daily exposure to natural environment has detrimental effects on our skin. The free radicals expectedly present in the air can be destructive and harmful altogether. As much as we cannot avoid these, treating our skin with the right products to shield and constantly heal it from these pollutants are very much helpful.

Prevention of skin hyperpigmentation

Babor White Effects Intensive Concentrate aids in the prevention of hyper-pigmentation, dark spots, and fights off free radicals. This formulation actually brightens hyper-pigmented and wrinkle aging spots, and is very much advised for all skin types. In addition, it hinders melanin production and results to a uniform and balanced skin tone all over. Vitamin E is incorporated in this Intensive Concentrate that goes deep into the skin cells to fight off free radicals.

Creating Balance

Skin affected by hyperpigmentation is balanced and treated by Lightplex Scientific Pigment Balancer. Darkened and discolored areas are eventually diminished leaving the skin refreshed and balanced. It is widely known as a potent skin balancer as this Bioelements formulation is equipped with cosmeceutical at maximum potency to brighten skin tone. The most superficial skin layers which have been damaged are exfoliated gently because of the presence of Biobrightening extracts, and similar to Babor White Effects, melanin production is delayed and inhibited.

Inflammatory hyperpigmentation is a skin condition that is usually cause by over exposure to sunlight. It can also occur after an acne infection and it leaves the skin with dark spots or blemishes. While this is not a serious condition, it causes psychological problems to the person affected because he or she feels less beautiful.

What is skin inflammatory hyperpigmentation?

Inflammatory hyperpigmentation is a condition that occurs when the pigment producing melanocyte produces more than the expected amount of melanin. The melanonocyte is then injected into the surrounding skin cells and tissues. The function of the melanin is to give the skin and hair its color. However, if produced in excess amount it causes dark brown or black spots on the skin. Most people who have inflammatory hyperpigmentation choose to stay indoors because of the shame they feel when they go out and try to mingle with other people since the skin has some sought of patches that are visible to anyone who might have a glance. These patches are not all permanent, some of them die out as time progresses on. It is also possible to speedup the healing process through medications or natural remedies.

What causes inflammatory hyperpigmentation?

Inflammatory hyperpigmentation can be caused by several things. Some common causes of this deficiency are sun damage. This causes a permanent aged appearance on the skin. The sun also alters the way the skin look and feels. This condition is known as photo damage. It is a direct result of the ultra violent rays coming into contact with the skin. You should apply sunscreen on your skin when going out to reduce sun damage. Another cause of inflammatory hyperpigmentation is the presence of acne on the body. Acne is brought about as a result of the blockage of the pores. This is brought about by the disorder that affects the oil gland. This in turn causes an inflammation of the blocked pore leading to region darkening. The dark spots are likely to remain even after acne has dried up.

How to get rid of inflammatory hyperpigmentation

Natural remedies

There are several methods that can be used to treat hyperpigmentation. They can be classified into natural, over-the-counter and medication remedies. Natural treatment of inflammatory hyperpigmentation are the ones that do not involve the use of chemical compounds in the treatment while the artificial way involve the use of chemical compound that are prescribed by doctors (medicine). Some of the natural methods of treating hyperpigmentation include wearing sunscreen when going out in the sun. The sunscreen acts as a shield from the direct sunlight.

Another natural remedy for inflammatory hyperpigmentation involves applying lemon juice on the spots. The lemon juice contains an acid which acts to bleach the dark spot. By applying the lemon juice on your face you are actually bleaching you face. This is safe to do and one can be assured that it will not cause any harm to the user. The lemon juices can be applied using cotton wool at night. When one sleeps, the juice will have done its function by morning so it can be washed off. Honey can also be used to treat hyperpigmentation. It gives amazing results if applied. Other natural remedies for inflammatory hyperpigmentation include olive oil, aloe vera gel, fresh onion and herbal remedies.

Over-the-counter treatments

Chemical peels are available over-the-counter at your local drug store. The peels work by removing the dead skin.

Medication remedies

Medication remedies for inflammatory hyper-pigmentation include laser surgery, laser resurfacing surgery and others. Not many people can afford these surgeries because they are expensive. In addition, people are afraid of complication which are common and can have a long-lasting impact in your life. Another way is by the use micro-dermabrasion. This machine works by emitting very small and fine crystals. These fine crystals work by removing thee outer skin on the face to reduce inflammatory hyper-pigmentation. This happens mostly in the area that is covered by the patches or spots. All these product and system are known to work.

The best care for our skin is just to take good care of it. Excessive production of melanin can change the skins tone but with the right treatment and care all that can change within no time at all. Make sure to consult a doctor before embarking on inflammatory hyperpigmentation remedies to avoid complications.

Hyperpigmentation is the excess pigmentation in a tissue or a body part, skin included. It is a condition which leads to dark skins developing patches or dark spots and getting discolored. The darkening of the skin may be a result of sun damage, injuries, hormones, skin type, acne or medications. Hyperpigmentation is usually not that big a problem early in life but as you age, you may start noticing “darker” patches or spots on your face and body.

Your hyperpigmentation treatments will be based on its cause, the type of your skin and your aesthetic goals. In order to determine the cause of your hyperpigmentation, consult a dermatologist whom you can trust. Hyperpigmentation treatments may involve a change in your daily skin care routine, using bleaching creams, changing your current medicines or further invasive treatments.

Below mentioned are the currently available hyperpigmentation treatments. In consultation with your doctor, choose the one which suits you the best:

Hyperpigmentation Treatments with the help of Bleach and Creams

Hydroquinone: Hydroquinone is a bleaching agent that blocks Melanin. Melanin is the pigment that gives color to the skin. Hydroquinone can be obtained over the counter. Your doctor may advise you to combine it with other products in order to maximize the results. If a high dose is used for a long time it may cause side effects such as irritation, increase in pigmentation, permanent hypopigmentation and discolorations. Minimize the complications by following your doctor’s advice carefully.

Lumixyl: Lumixyl is a new skin lightening cream that helps reduce hyperpigmentation spots. It is used as an alternative to Hydroquinone. It helps in reducing melanin but does not irritate the skin like other creams or bleaching agents. It is applied topically and available at the doctors’ clinics.

Retin-A: It is a prescription retinoid used topically. It works by exfoliating the skin, speeding up cell growth, diminishing the dark spots and smoothing out the uneven spots in the process. Your doctor may prescribe Retin-A with other bleaching agents such as hydroquinone.

Elure: It is the most recent entry to the hyperpigmentation treatment arena. It includes a foaming face-wash, night cream and a lotion that reduces the melanin in the skin temporarily. You may see the results in a month and there is a very low possibility of irritation to your skin. It is exclusively available at doctors’ clinics.

Clinical Skin Treatments for Hyperpigmentation

Chemical Peels: They use a chemical solution to remove the outer layer of the skin which is damaged. This procedure helps in improving the skin texture, diminishing dark spots, hyperpigmentation spots, acne etc. The cost of chemical peels or microdermabrasion may turn out to be more than over the counter products, however, it is an effective treatment.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL): It involves using broad-spectrum light for the treatment of various skin related issues such as minor sun damage, liver spots, dark patches due to hyperpigmentation, redness, age spots etc. It is a therapy based on high intensity pulses of light that penetrate into the skin. As there is no downtime in this treatment, you can go back to your life post-treatment with no blisters, burns etc.

Laser: This treatment is used for moderately severe conditions of hyperpigmentation. The rays of laser are used to remove the layer of the skin that is damaged, leaving a glowing inner skin! At times, chemical peels may be used prior to laser treatments.

Hyperpigmentation Treatments with the help of Medications

Doctors usually prescribe Retin-A, Avita, Renova and other similar medicines to treat hyperpigmentation and its scars.

Hyperpigmentation Treatments with the help of Home Remedies

You can apply aloe vera gel mixed with honey and milk on the skin suffering from hyperpigmentation. It may take several weeks to get the desired results, though. Another effective yet slow treatment is to mix honey, rose water, lemon juice with potato, cucumber or tomato extract; make a paste out of these ingredients and apply to the skin. These foods have skin lightening and brightening properties, and are inexpensive hyperpigmentation treatments.

Rather than waiting for the marks to go away, consider visiting a dermatologist. Get an opinion about the course of action to be taken which shall be best suited to your skin and your budget.

Hyperpigmentation is a condition that is characterized by the darkening and discoloration of a particular area of the skin or the nails. Hyperpigmentation scars are common among people with darker skin. Thus, people living in the Asian, Mediterranean and African countries are more prone to hyperpigmentation scars. Although the aesthetic appearance of an individual gets deteriorated when people suffer from hyperpigmentation but its nature is generally harmless. Melanin, which is a colorant pigment found in human body accounts for hyperpigmentation spots. Hyperpigmentation scars occur when there is an abnormal increase of melanin pigments in the skin due to certain conditions.

Major types of hyperpigmentation scars

Hyperpigmentation is of different types. The primary factors that differentiate these hyperpigmentation scars are majorly the area of occurrence, nature of the scars and factors at play behind the appearance of these scars. Following are the different types of hyperpigmentation.

Melasma

This type of hyperpigmentation scars is common among women. It is mostly prevalent among those who consume birth control pills. But in comparison only 10% men are affected with melasma. On occasions of melasma hyperpigmentation scars mostly occur on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip and bridge of nose. They appear as dark brown or blackish brown patches that get deeper over the time.

Chloasma

This form of hyperpigmentation scars is common among pregnant women. During pregnancy women overproduce melanin due to hormonal change. This leads to Chloasma or “mask of pregnancy” as it is called in colloquial terms. The scary condition gets worsened when sun exposure is more. The discolored spots appear on the face and in the abdominal area on occasion of chloasma.

Solar Lentigines

Solar Lentigines is a condition when hyperpigmentation scars occur due to over exposure to sun. The ultraviolet rays of the sun damage the protective cells called melanocytes. These cells act as natural sun guard for the skin. Consequently, this leads to abnormal production of melanin pigments. Eventually tiny brown spots appear on the face as well as the areas that are constantly exposed to sun. This form of hyperpigmentation scars is common among people of older ages. It is commonly known as “age spot”.

Causes of hyperpigmentation scars

There are various causes that lead to hyperpigmentation scars. Sometimes it is the deterioration of melanocytes. At other times it is due to the side effects of illness or medicines. Enlisted below are some of the common causes.

Hyperpigmentation scars due to over exposure to sun

Over exposure to sun retards the potency of the melanocytes to fight sun damage. As a result, the production of melanin pigments spurs up. Hence, brown and black spots of different sizes appear all over the skin. These hyperpigmentation scars appear in areas that are mostly exposed to sun.

Post inflammation hyperpigmentation scars

There are people who experience hyperpigmentation scars when bruises, cuts, scrapes and burns start healing up. The stage of healing up is followed by the occurance of post inflammation hyperpigmentation scars. At this stage discoloration is prevalent around the area of the wound. These hyperpigmentation scars can be temporary in nature as well as permanent.

Hyperpigmentation scars due to hormonal changes

Hormonal fluctuation is one of the major causes of hyperpigmentation. Women, who get pregnant, consume birth control pills or undergo hormonal treatment experience hyperpigmentation.

Hyperpigmentation scars due to medication

Side effects of certain medicines also lead to hyperpigmentation scars. Certain antibiotics, antimalarial medicines, antiseizure drugs, antiarthritis drugs and hormonal drugs are chiefly responsible for this.

Diseases that cause hyperpigmentation scars

Medical researches reveal that there are diseases that are responsible for hyperpigmentation. The major ones among them are Cushing’s disease, Addison’s disease, Haemochromatosis, and Puetz Jeghers Syndrome. The elevated levels of hormones that stimulate melanocytes in case of Addision’s disease lead to hyperpigmentation. Similarly, excessive production of adrenocorticotropic hormone is responsible for the appearance of hyperpigmentation spots in Cushing’s disease. Hyperpigmentation scars due to Puetz Jeghers Syndrome are due to the deposition of hyperpigmented macules around the area of the lips. Likewise, chronic buildup of iron in the body as a consequence of the genetic disease, Haemochromatosis also accounts for hyperpigmentation scars.

Chemical exposure causes hyperpigmentation scars

Certain chemicals act as major factors that cause hyperpigmentation. Some of them are salicytic acid, cisplatin and bleomycin. Similarly, mercury poisoning is also responsible for hyperpigmentation scars.

Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is the term used to refer to darkening of the skin after one has had an inflammatory wound. This is the skin normal reactions to inflammation; PIH is seen as darkened, pink or brown depending on the skin color and tone flat area of the skin. PIH may develop when a pimple, rush or other stimuli brings about skin inflammation triggering the production of melanin that is more than usual. This excess melanin causes the skin to darken and discolor the wound area, when the rush or the wound heals the discoloration.

WHAT IS HYPERPIGMENTATION?

Hyperpigmentation is when an area of the skin or nails becomes darker than other parts of the skin; this is caused by an increase in melanin. It is mainly a cosmetic concern although sometimes can be a sign of a medical problem.
Hyperpigmentation can be as a result of inflammation and sun damage. People who have a darker skin tone e.g. people from the Mediterranean, Africans or darker Asians especially if they are exposed to a lot of sun are more likely than others to be affected.

Most forms of hyperpigmentation are as a result of excess melanin, melanin which is produced by melanocytes by the epidermis lower layer is the pigment that is responsible for the color of the skin, hair and eyes. The body is less able to regulate melanocyte as it ages, as the sun UV lays stimulates the activity of melanocyte if the concentration of these cells is more than other areas it affects hyperpigmentation.

Diseases that are associated with hyperpigmentation include:

Addison’s disease

Cushing’s disease

Melasma

Linea nigra

Smokers melanosa

Celiac disease

many more

iS Clinical Hyperpigmentation Kit

Hyperpigmentation can also be caused by use of skin lightening lotions and skin injuries including acne vulgaris still remains. PIH equally affects men and women but is a lot more common in people whose skin tone is darker and people who suffer from acne. An inflamed acne causes acne hyperpigmentation PIH can be as a result of acne or can even be as a result of minor papules and pimples however the more a break out is inflamed the darker and bigger the acne hyperpigmentation will be the chance of developing post inflammatory hyperpigmentation is increased by popping and picking pimples.

TREATING ACNE HYPERPIGMENTATION

Although acne hyperpigmentation fades away with time without treatment it may take three to twenty four months and for some people even longer to clear, also the darker the PIH and the bigger the contrast of the skin tone to the macule, the longer it takes to fade away. Before beginning any treatment one should first deal with controlling the acne because new pimples and acne will probably cause other PIH and the effectiveness of the treatment will be reduced, also one should understand that results will take some time, use of sunscreen is highly recommended since the sun may darken the discoloration more. PIH cases that are mild may respond to over the counter products most of which are brightening products that are made of combining alpha and beta hydroxy acids.

HYPERPIGMENTATION TREATMENTS INCLUDE:

HYDROQUINONE
Hydroquinone is a treatment that is used a lot to treat acne hyperpigmentation and is available at a strength of 1% and 2% over the counter and 3% – 4% for prescription cream. Hydroquinone blocks the enzyme that is responsible for producing melanin and thus causing the skin to lighten. Most creams that contain Hydroquinone will also contain glycolic acid and kojic acid vitamin C or retinoid.

GLYCOLIC ACID
Glycolic acid is found in a lot of skin care products e.g. Gels, cleansers and creams it contains an alpha hydroxyl acid, it exfoliates skin effectively in the process lightening post inflammatory hyperpigmentation while improving your skin texture.

TOPICAL RETINOIDS
Retinoids for example tazarotene and tretinoin speed up the turnover rate of cells this way they clear up acne and also help in clearing up of acne hyperpigmentation. Retin-A, Differin and Tazorac are examples of Retinoid creams the down side of using Retinoids is that they can cause redness, irritation or excessive dryness.

AZELIC ACID
Azelic acid only available by prescription, it’s used for the treatment of acne as well as acne hyperpigmentation, it is available in gel and cream form it works by increasing cell turnover while decreasing inflammation, some studies suggest that azelic acid is as effective in treating acne hyperpigmentation as hydroquinone.

More persistent forms of acne hyperpigmentation use a series of treatment to treat them this is done at medi-spas, skin spas or by a dermatologist.
